Lowie and Sofietje

Lowietje and Sofietje. One day when I went to feed Faithje and all the cats at grandpa's I thought I heard puppy noises from the barn/stable at grandpa's. But for a moment and then it was quiet again. So I asked grandpa if he had puppies? I had Faithje sterilized and she wasn't pregnant before that either so it couldn't be that.

No, said grandpa. I don't know anything. But he acted suspicious, a bit nervous.

Then I heard nothing for a while until a few days later when I drove up and two puppies came walking towards me. The black one (Sofietje) with puppy mange and the other one (Lowietje) seemed to be fine. Oh no. I went to Grandpa, what is this now? Yes he didn't dare to show them to me earlier because he was afraid I would get angry because I had just got everything under control with him after having all the animals and Faithje castrated.

He would have saved them from the neighbor. The neighbor's bitch had 4 puppies, 2 had already died, no care, no decent food and the neighbor doesn't look after them. These two came to Grandpa's yard and then he quickly put them in the barn and thought that I could help them and the neighbor now thinks that they are dead and he doesn't care either, he says.

Well, what now… let's help then, first with decent food, deworming and help for the scabies etc. etc. and then we'll see what happens next.

Faithje couldn't believe her luck. Finally she had two friends of her own who play and sleep and eat with her. She took care of them as their mother. I was happy for her but boy, another worry and grandpa should go back to animals instead of more animals. Everything went well for a while until Lowietje got a bit sick, action was taken immediately and after fairly intensive care he seemed to recover. And just when I could breathe a sigh of relief because Lowietje seemed strong and healthy again, Sofietje started. Of course the same treatment was started immediately but what worked quite quickly with Lowietje, the opposite happened with Sofietje. In 1 day Sofietje finally collapsed. On Saturday she was not yet completely fit but nothing to really lose sleep over. When I came to feed her a day later on Sunday she was lying in the hay in the sun with her eyes and mouth open but otherwise apathetic, her feet already cold and when I picked her up she was stiff. She didn't give anything and really seemed to be on the point of death. I immediately rushed to the emergency animal hospital 1.5 hours away and just hoped and prayed that she would make it there.

There was immediate action, blood tests, no Pravo (thank god) no leishmania, no ehlichia, no anasplasmosis but seriously dehydrated, anemia and just a serious illness. She had to stay of course. On an IV with medication and fluids, and then hope that she would overcome it. She fought for 6 days in the hospital but she overcame it. I was allowed to pick her up after 6 days and reunite her with her brother Lowietje and her stepmother Faithje who were overjoyed. In the meantime, Lowietje and Sofietje are strong, healthy and young, very much alive adolescent dogs, of course also sterilized and castrated and very happy together with Faithje.
